At ParentShield, we’re always on the lookout for tools and updates that help families introduce mobile independence in a safe and secure way. That’s why we wanted to share news of an upcoming feature from Google that could be interesting to many of our parents.
Google Wallet will soon be available for children on supported Android devices – giving them the ability to make contactless payments and keep supported passes like event tickets, library cards and gift cards through the Google Family Link app.

What Is Google Wallet for Kids?
Google Wallet is a digital wallet app that lets users securely store and use payment cards, event tickets, loyalty cards, library cards, and more – all from their phone. Until now, it’s been a feature for adults only. But with this upcoming update, children will soon be able to access Wallet on their Android devices – safely and with your permission.
What Will Children Be Able to Do?
Once available, children will be able to:
- Pay contactless in shops with a card you’ve added and approved
- Store digital passes like gift cards, boarding passes, or loyalty cards
- Access Wallet features based on your settings in Family Link
What Do Parents Control?
With this new feature, you stay in full control via the Google Family Link app. Here’s what you’ll be able to do:
Approve Payment Cards
- Children can’t add payment cards on their own – you’ll need to authorise each one
- You’ll receive an email notification for every transaction
- You can remove cards remotely at any time
Manage Digital Passes
- Your child can use things like library cards, gift cards, or event tickets
- If needed, you can block access to all passes instantly
- Blocking passes will also remove any they’ve already added
Monitor Use Through Family Link
- Only parents or family managers can change Wallet settings
- Track recent payments
- You can control everything through the Family Link app or families.google.com
- Spending controls are managed via the card issuer, not Family Link
Why This Matters to ParentShield Families
When the time is right, this can be another helpful step toward giving children gradual, guided independence.
It’s ideal for everyday use like:
- A child walking to the shop alone for the first time
- Managing birthday or Christmas gift cards
- School trips, events, and activities that use digital tickets
And because everything is managed from your own device, you’re never out of the loop.
